Abstract Because of their usually high molecular weight, polymers are generally considered as being low environmental concern and are, therefore, exempted from registration evaluation within REACH. This exemption is currently reviewed by the European Commission. Against this background, data on fate effects selected water-soluble synthetic organic used in cosmetic products were evaluated. The include non-ionic polyethylene glycols (PEGs), anionic homo- copolymers acrylic acid (AA-P&CoPs), cationic polyquaterniums (PQs). PEGs more amenable to biodegradation than AA-P&CoPs PQs, which biodegrade slowly. In wastewater treatment plants, sorption precipitation expected lead an effective removal wastewater.
